Reading Lolita in Tehran by Azar Nafisi
Chosen by Paige, served with -- since Paige was reminded
of the Iranian hostage crisis, and therefore the 1970s, frito
pie and ho-hos.
Brent: B- Reasonably good job, but I got alienated in the
first chapter.
Paige: B+ It kept provoking me and kept making me read more.
Rett: C+ I didn't read that much, but what I read I didn't
like.
Colleen: B I genuinely liked the discussion of Iran . . .
but I was less into the literature aspects.
Tammy: C It was really just average.
Karen Z: C+ It's intentions were good, and I even think it's
important -- but I just didn't enjoy it.
John: B- The things it was trying to do were really important
-- it just didn't succeed in doing them for me. But if it
weren't at least a B, I wouldn't have finished it.
Karen F: B- I started out thinking I would love it -- I love
the idea of the Comp Lit version of a memoir, but ultimately
I think each section should have been about half as long.
Also, she edited out any true emotion that would have really
let us feel for her or her characters. |
