The Age of Innocence
by Edith Wharton
This
book fools you into thinking it's just a comedy of manners about the
upper crust New York society at the turn of the 19th century. But no.
The last three chapters turn around and whallop you with some of the
most startling plot developments I've ever read. My jaw literally fell
open at the end of each of those last chapters. Fantastic, fantastic
book.
