Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry

Written in the 1960s, this kids book won the Newbury Award. I read a
lot of children's and young adult literature, and am always surprised
at how unafraid the authors are to tackle really tough subjects. This
is a book about blacks in the deep south a generation or two after emancipation
(the heroine's grandparents had been slaves). The conclusion is riveting.
