A friend just wrote to say that he had to disagree with this advice -- the Lonely Planet, he said was crucial.

I didn't mean to imply it wasn't. It was bringing ALL the books that was an issue. All of them were good for planning the trip. The DK and National Geographic are both beautiful and helped set the scene -- both were too big to bring, however, and didn't have loads of hotel information, so we shouldn't have brought them.

Traveler's Tales is the best way to get excited about a country ahead of time -- but not necessary for the trip per se.

The Lonely Planet was crucial for day to day getting around, and Eleni used it as her bible. I relied on the 50 Most Memorable Trips in China which I recommend highly, as it is beautifully written and gives great itineraries for each city (but it wouldn't have been sufficient without the Lonely Planet since it doesn't have any mid-range hotels and is a little out of date).
