September 05, 2004Favorite Sign of the DayOn a giant billboard for 501 jeans with a shirtless man wearing Levis stretched across a bed: "6 oz of steel where it counts." Excuse me??? I'm not allowed to wear a low cut blouse but they can put that in an ad?? Posted by karenceliafox at September 5, 2004 04:17 PMComments
I knew a double standard existed in our country but it surprised me that India had one as well. You figure the inherited quality of 501's would be enough to sell them but you know what they say "sex sells." Now I might be taking this all wrong being a guy and all. I would be quite interested to discover how this country handles gender and its roles in their society. Never venturing away from Phoenix let alone the country, I find my knowledge so limited but then again life provides oppertunites to learn so I'm never bored. Glad you are enjoying your trip but I would bet home is starting to look pretty cozy by now. Continue to have a safe trip and thanks for keeping us up to speed on the events. laterz Posted by: Merrill Butterman at September 8, 2004 11:16 AMI have asked a few people what it feels like to be in a culture where the ads, televsion shows and movies depict a lifestyle that is fairly foreign to what is actually accepted in a day to day way, but haven't gotten any really concrete answers. It seems to be partly generational, however. The vague answers I've gotten suggest that the younger crowd accepts a more Western standard of what is "acceptable" while such things as the billboard pretty much go over the older generation's head. . . hmmm. . . Six weeks away from DC -- two in Woods Hole, and four in India.
