October
15, 2002 -- Architecture
The
buildings of Prague came through World War II relatively unscathed.
Consequently the architecture is a delirious mix of styles, some
dating back to before the last millennium, others much more recent.
On any given block one may see Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance,
Baroque, Roccocco, Art Nouveau, Neoclassic, Romantic, and Cubist
buildings standing next to each other, all with the occasional "Late
Communist" as i've come to call the stark, straight-lined dark
buildings that popped up in the 60s and 70s (officially, it's known
as "Socialist Realist.")
